World leaders are in Toronto for the G8 and G20 summits but opposition is everywhere Vancouver – On Saturday June 26th, Vancouver activists will take to the streets to march in solidarity with the thousands protesting the G8 and G20 Summits in Toronto.  Organized by the Vancouver Community Mobilization Network, an umbrella organization made up of local grassroots groups, a rally and march is set to begin at 12 noon at Grandview Park, at the corner of William Street and Commercial Drive. Organizers say they plan to send a loud and clear message to the G8 and G20. Edward Durgan of the VCMN explains saying, “the opposition has coalesced because these unaccountable meetings have created poverty, displacement, environmental destruction and it’s time that the solutions come from the people and their communities”.  Durgan cites the worlds nearly 239 million unemployed, increasing poverty and income inequality, and the 516,000 deaths of women yearly from complications related to childbearing, as proof that the “neoliberal policies espoused by the members of the G8 and G20, which include the IMF and World Bank, are immensely harmful”. Speaking from Toronto Syed Hussan added, “With the G7 countries producing most of the world’s weapons, causing most of the wars, funding most of the industrial and environmental havoc – the last decade has seen nearly 180 million people forced to migrate”.

Saturday’s event is endorsed by over 20 local organizations ranging from Friends of UBC Farm to the Downtown Eastside Neighborhood Council, and organizers say that they are not a minority, but reflect the opinions of a majority of the people in Canada who see a system that can’t be fixed.

Marla Renn from the VCMN adds, “the policies made at this years G8 and G20 summits will be the same policies responsible for the current economic and environmental crisis.  We don’t need to fix the system of global capitalism, it is working perfectly, rather we need a new system.  There are real alternatives; proposals that reflect a new vision of social economic and environmental justice.”
